When you are losing weight healthy diet ideas are vital. Often, it’s not so important how much you eat if you take good care of what you eat. Eating healthy will often, by itself, lead to slow but steady weight loss that actually stays off — unlike all of the crash diets out there which just make you gain even more in the long run.

However, many people that strive to eat a healthy diet often miss the mark. You may think that a salad is a good choice, for example, but it really depends on what goes into the salad. Often the fat content of a salad is very high. Some of the salads at major chain restaurants clock in at over 1000 calories! That’s half of the daily requirement of the average person – and it’s only a part of one meal!

If you want to be losing weight healthy, you’d do well to take a look at some of the aspects that make up a healthy diet:

1. It’s low calorie. Everyone needs a set amount of calories to keep their body going. While this varies according to a number of factors, including weight, gender, and activity level, eating the right number of calories for you determines whether you gain, lose, or maintain your weight. A typical American diet can easily be more than 1000 calories per day over the needed amount. Instead, aim to eat a diet that is low in calories, usually between 1800-2500 daily to maintain weight and a little less for losing weight. Adjust within that range according to your height and activity levels.

2. It focuses on fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are an ideal food for a healthy diet because they are high in nutrients and low in calories. For the most part, this is always a good choice to turn to when you are feeling hungry.

3. It incorporates whole grains. Whole grains are unprocessed grains, which have a higher nutritional value than their processed counterparts. Examples of whole grains are brown rice, oatmeal, and whole wheat bread. For a healthy diet, try to aim for at least half of your grains to be whole grains.

4. It allows for a wide variety of foods. Different types of foods contain different nutrients. When your diet incorporates a variety of foods, you are more likely to get most of the nutrients that your body needs. Focusing only on certain foods may cause you to miss out on other important nutrients, such as calcium or protein.

5. It features water as the beverage of choice. Because your body is primarily made up of water, it’s very important to make sure that you stay hydrated. The best way to do this is to make water your primary drink. Make sure to limit sodas and other sugary drinks especially.

If you are not currently following a healthy diet, it’s a good idea to take things in small steps. When you incorporate these small changes to your diet, it easily becomes automatic and you will be losing weight healthy without even thinking about it.
