The traditional dieter will usually aim to eat between 1200-1500 calories per day. If you’re like many new mothers, this may have been the diet that you returned to post-baby. However, you’ve probably noticed that you aren’t losing much weight even though you’re limiting your caloric intake so much. The reason is that breastfeeding mothers need more calories than the typical dieter, typically an extra 500 calories. And this is for someone that is fairly inactive. If you are also exercising, you may need even more calories.

It may seem strange to learn that you need to eat more in order to lose weight. However, if you do not eat enough, your body will try to hold on to every ounce of fat on your body because it is worried that you are starving and that it will need that energy to make food for you and your baby.

If you are trying to lose weight while breastfeeding and not getting results, take a look at the amount of calories that you are eating. It’s probably not enough. Of course, the extra calories that you eat should be healthy foods, not junk.

Successfully losing weight requires a delicate balance. Make sure that you are tracking your food and eating enough to satisfy yourself and your baby so that you can safely and naturally lose weight while breastfeeding.
